2006 Yamaha FJR1300A
Restyled FJR1300A and New FJR1300AS;
The most exciting high-performance sports tourers
When the FJR 1300 was launched it created a new sub-category within the sports tourer class. Before
the FJR arrived, the sports tourer customer had the choice of a range of relatively functional machinery
that offered good long distance capability, but little in the way of riding excitement.
However, in the late 990s Yamaha recognised that there were increasing numbers of riders who
wanted a machine offering long-distance capability combined with high overall performance. With its
remarkable engine and chassis performance, combined with its legendary 'go-anywhere' long-distance
ability, the Yamaha FJR 300A has come to be widely recognised as today's premier sports tourer.
A total restyle for the FJR, plus a new semi-automatic model
For 2006 Yamaha now introduce a totally restyled FJR 300A which features stylish new aerodynamic
bodywork that offers an even greater degree of comfort. And joining the new
FJR 1300A is the new
FJR 1300AS, a variation model introducing a completely new Yamaha technology - the Yamaha Chip
Controlled Shift (YCC-S) - making the FJR one of the most sophisticated sports tourers ever seen.
ABS fitted as standard equipment;
Both models will feature ABS incorporating a Combination Brake System as standard equipment,
and will also benefit from a number of important new chassis features for 2006. In addition to the
new high specification braking systems, both models will also run with a wide range of important
technical improvements which are designed to reinforce the FJR's position as the world's leading high
performance sports tourer.
Totally new bodywork for 2006;
In a move designed to accentuate its position as the leading choice for experienced and discerning
riders who want a technologically-advanced high-performance sports tourer, Yamaha have redesigned
the bodywork of the FJR models for 2006.
This sleek and aerodynamically efficient new bodywork retains the distinctive DNA of the previous
FJR model, while at the same time delivering higher levels of comfort, and also projecting a more
sophisticated image.
Increased screen adjustability;
The FJR's electronically-adjustable windscreen is just one of the features that set this model apart
from other machines, and for 2006 its specification has been further enhanced. In order to offer the
rider even higher levels of wind protection, our designers have increased the range of adjustability to
20 mm, compared with 80 mm on the 2005 model.
At its highest position the new screen is 4.6 mm higher and 63.4 mm closer to the rider. This increased
range enables the rider to choose the best screen position and angle to suit varying conditions, and
also allows riders of different heights to select a set-up that best suits their needs. In addition, ducts
have been added at the base of the new screen, and they direct fresh air towards the rider and help
reduce negative pressure in the cockpit area.
New width-adjustable middle cowl;
Another new feature designed to improve wind protection on the 2006 model is the adjustable middle
cowl. By using a two-step adjuster, the rider can control airflow over the knee and stomach areas by
adjusting the width of the new middle cowl by up to 30 mm.
Longer swingarm;
In order to ensure even greater levels of handling stability, the 2006 models are equipped with a
longer swingarm. Measuring 567 mm between the pivot centre and wheel axle centre, the new
swingarm is 35 mm longer than the 2005 design, and this 6.5% increase in length makes for enhanced
handling characteristics.
New curved radiator assembly;
Both the new FJR models benefit from the fitment of a new curved radiator with twin ring fans in
place of the 2005 model's flat radiator and single fan design. This new configuration enhances high
speed handling whilst offering excellent cooling performance.
And in order to increase comfort, the size of the radiator air inlets has been increased - and
a new air intake vent is added beneath the instruments - so that more heat is directed away
from the rider. At the same time, Yamaha engineers have also added heat insulation to the
lower front surface of the fuel tank, improving riding comfort even further.
Revised middle drive gear ratio
The 2006 models are equipped with a larger middle drive gear featuring 37 teeth, one more than the
2005 models. This increase in the drive gear diameter gives a 2.7% increase in overall gear ratios, which is
designed to reduce engine rpm at typical cruising speeds, ensuring greater rider and passenger comfort.
Adjustable seat height and three-step handlebar position
The 2006 models also feature an adjustable seat, which can be raised or lowered in two steps to give a
total height range of 20 mm. The latest model is also equipped with handlebars which can be adjusted
over three steps to give a range of mm forward/rearward movement. These two new features allow
the rider to choose the most suitable position to suit their own requirements.
ABS with Combination Brake System (CBS ABS);
Both of the new FJR models are now equipped with an ABS system incorporating a 'Combination
Brake System' (CBS ABS) which is designed to offer greater stability during braking.
Whenever the rear brake is applied, the CBS ABS system automatically applies the appropriate braking
force to the front wheel using the lower two pistons in the front right 4-piston caliper. In order to
ensure smooth and progressive action, the CBS ABS system's lower two pistons in the front right
caliper are smaller than the other six pistons in the dual front calipers. The CBS ABS system is activated
only when the rear brake is used.
When the front brake is operated, six of the eight front pistons - that is, all four on the left side caliper,
and the upper two on the right side caliper - are operated, while the two lower right front caliper
pistons of the Combination Brake System are not activated.
Combined with the ABS function, which is fitted to both the FJR 1300A and FJR 1300AS models,
the Combination Brake System delivers outstanding braking performance to complement the high
performance and potentially high payloads of this large capacity sports tourer.
Progressive throttle pulley;
Another new feature on the FJR models for 2006 is the progressive throttle pulley. This simple but
effective improvement makes for a lighter throttle feel in the low to mid-range, thereby improving
comfort and controllability.
Repositioned tandem footrests;
The 2006 models are equipped with repositioned tandem footrests that are designed to increase
comfort. Located 40 mm further forward, 20 mm lower and 4 mm further out from the frame,
they offer a more relaxed and natural body position, making the FJR models even more luxurious for
the passenger.
Improved honeycomb catalyser and new heater-equipped O2 sensor
To ensure that the FJR 1300A and FJR 1300AS exceed EU3 European emissions standards, the exhaust
system is now equipped with an additional honeycomb in the catalyser, and the amount of active
platinum and rhodium elements in the existing catalyser is increased.
In the control system a new heater-equipped O2 sensor is fitted, and this helps to reduce emissions
by more precisely adjusting the fuel supply just after engine start up, when the exhaust gases
temperatures are still relatively low.
New accessory storage compartment;
Offering a useful capacity of one litre, the newly-designed accessory storage compartment is also
equipped with a convenient 2 V 30 W DC output. For added security its colour co-ordinated flip-top
lid can be opened only when the ignition is switched on, and can be closed at any time.
New subframe; Sidecases fitted as standard equipment;
A new rear subframe has been designed to give better operability when raising the machine on the
centre stand, and it also reduces overall width when the FJR is fitted with side cases. And for 2006 both
models are equipped with side cases as standard equipment.
Other new features;
The comprehensive instrumentation displays a wide range of information and includes a new gear
position indicator, and for 2006 the meters feature a new silver frame for improved appearance and
better visibility.
As well as its new bodywork, the latest FJR 300A and FJR 300AS also feature newly designed
headlights and a new tail light. For 2006 there is also a conveniently located headlight beam adjuster
which allows for easy adjustment of the headlight to suit tandem riding conditions.
Other new-for-2006 features include white front and rear flasher lenses, and the newly-designed rear
view mirrors are horizontally-retractable for added convenience.
And on the FJR 1300AS only, heated handlebar grips are fitted as standard equipment.
