Ricky Carmichael raced his Team Makita RM-Z450 Suzuki to two runaway victories at the AMA Motocross fifth round at Red Bud in Michigan to increase his series lead to 69 points.

The 25-year-old THQ World and AMA Supercross Champion clinched the opening 30-minute plus two-lap event by 18 seconds from Kawasaki's James Stewart and the second by a 17-second margin from Kevin Windham as nearest series rival Chad Reed dropped out of the opening race when his chain derailed.

It was Carmichael's ninth straight victory from 10 races on the new four stroke and his 54th career 250 National win, doubling the total of All Time Great Bob Hannah. It was also Suzuki's first victory at the Red Bud track in 27 years.

In the first moto, Carmichael was sixth into the first turn behind leaders Reed and Stewart. But it wasn't long before he was on Stewart's heels and he caught and passed him on the second lap.

Leader Reed hit problems soon after the start when a rock shot up into his front sprocket, derailed the chain and smashed the crankcases, forcing him to pull out of the race. The incident handed Carmichael the lead and he steadily set about opening up a commanding lead that Stewart could not touch.

Carmichael took the holeshot in race two and was never challenged. Behind him was where all the action took place: Windham and Stewart swapped positions numerous times until finally on the third lap, when Windham attempted to get past, the two came together and Windham went down. After that, the Honda rider picked himself up, put his head down and charged back from 10 seconds down to catch and pass Stewart for second on the sixth lap.
