Dunlop Moto1 promises cracking weekend - October 14th 2005

All roads lead to Mallory Park, Leicestershire this weekend to witness the much-anticipated battle to discover who is currently the best all-round motorcycle star.

Twenty-four riders from all disciplines of the sport will come together for a five-way competition guaranteed to find out if they have expert skills outside their own category of bikesport.

For instance, can Italian Superbike star Frankie Chili hack it on a trials bike? Can top motocross rider Billy Mackenzie handle himself aboard a sidecar outfit and can world trials ace Steve Colley get amongst it on the Supersport Hondas?

All these and a vast variety of questions will remain unanswered until the final chequered flag falls at Mallory late on Sunday afternoon.

Ady Smith, Matt Winstanley, Christian Iddon and Anita Doran are the supermoto experts; Mackenzie and David Campbell represent motocross; Chili, Craig Jones, Dean Ellison, Jonathan Rea, Ben Wilson and Billy McConnell road racing; Colley and Maria Conway trials plus Wayne Braybrook, a top Enduro and Trials rider.

In addition, three finalists from the Dunlop Ultimate Biker competition, which has been running all year, will reach its climax within Moto 1. Carl Nash (heats winner), Andy Carlile (second) and Steve Reynolds (third) will go head-to-head to thrash out their own ambitions.

A number of last minute changes to the Moto1 entry have come about for various reasons. Karl Harris has broken his foot so his place has been taken by Jonathan Rea - who finished 10th in both British Superbike Championship races at Brands on Sunday. Leighton Haigh has injured his arm in a trials accident and will be subbed by Motocross rider Jody Smyth. David Anthony replaces Jamie Robinson who is on an evaluation test for a top 2006 World Superbike team and Steve Plater is unable to compete for personal family reasons and hands over to Ben Wilson, who was 12th and 13th in his BSB races last weekend. World Superbike star Chris Walker will be at Moto1 but is now unlikely to compete. Following a brilliant ride in extreme pain at last weekend's final World Superbike race, he has been told by his physiotherapist that he should not risk his injured elbow by riding off-road.

On Sunday afternoon, spectators have the added bonus of the annual Race of the Year on the main Mallory track. This offers the road race boys a final chance to impress sponsors for next season as well as showing home fans a further opportunity to display the talents they have presented on the World and British championships during 2005, riders such as Glen Richards, Dean Thomas and Tommy Hill.

Moto1 admission costs 15 on Saturday 15th October and 18 on Sunday 16th. A weekend ticket cost 25 reduced to 20 if bought in advance. General information and ticket sales on 01624 640000 or visit www.moto1.org.
