It's official - BMW Motorrad is the fastest growing motorcycle brand in the UK according to sales performance figures released at the end of April. This significant achievement makes BMW the fifth largest motorcycle brand in 2005 ahead of rival manufacturers including Kawasaki and Harley-Davidson.

Despite overall market conditions remaining static, BMW's sales are up 42 per cent year on year and the company's market share has grown by 1.6 percentage points in this period - a figure unmatched by any other motorcycle manufacturer in the UK. Such success ensures BMW Motorrad has not only achieved the largest percentage growth increase, but also the largest rise in terms of sheer volume to date in 2005.

The stimulus for this success lies with BMW's new generation models. To be launched on 4 June, recent press reports have already positioned the new K1200 R as the best naked roadster in its class, (displacing Triumph's Speed Triple). Additionally, Motor Cycle News recently placed BMW's first 167 bhp superbike - the formidable K1200 S - as runner-up in their quest to unveil the ultimate street bike. It is currently the best-selling supersport over 1000cc, outpacing Honda's Blackbird, Suzuki's Hayabusa and Kawasaki's ZX-12R.

BMW's distinctive and bold R1200 GS 'boxer' has now firmly entered the mainstream. It is in fact currently the UK's third most popular choice of motorcycle overall (behind Honda's CBR1000RR and Suzuki's GSX-R1000). In its own Adventure Sport category the GS is selling three times as many units as its nearest rival. BMW's R1200 RT continues to top the sales charts in the touring sector - leading its nearest rival (Honda's Pan European) by 26 per cent.

BMW Motorrad's Motorcycle Marketing Manager Tony Jakeman commented: "We're delighted with these extremely positive early results and our new product range is clearly appealing to UK bikers. We promised faster, lighter, more dynamic motorcycles that would appeal to a much wider target audience. We have delivered on that promise, but without losing any of the legendary product attributes that BMW Motorrad is famous for, such as 'real world' road-holding and handling, longevity and reliability. With the exciting new products that are still to come, we're confident this increase in demand for BMWs will continue for the foreseeable future."
