Series organisers are pleased to announce that the next round of the British
Supermoto Championship will be held at the Rockingham Motor Speedway on the
30th and 31st July.
The format for the weekend at the Corby, Northants circuit will be the same
as other championship rounds this year with the Saturday being a practice
day for all-comers. Sunday is race-day for SM1, SM2, SM4 and Clubman's
Trophy.
The start/finish line of the specially designed circuit will be in the
shadow of the Turn 4 seating area and main grandstand making an impressive
backdrop to the championships first visit to the motor speedway. The course
will be an interesting 60/40 combination of tarmac and gravel which is a
higher off-road percentage than usual for UK competitors.
Following an initial inspection of the circuit at the end of last week
championship organisers will be undertaking further work over the coming
weeks in conjunction with the ACU and AMCA. Input will be sought from senior
riders within the championship prior to the track layout being finalised.
Championship organisers were very excited about the prospect of attending
such a high profile venue. Mark Powell from Vivaldi said he hoped Rockingham
could become a regular date on the Supermoto calendar.
"A primary objective of ours is looking at ways in which we could expand the
sports appeal. Taking Supermoto to such a high profile circuit is the first
step in that process. If the weekend is as successful as we hope then we'd
like Rockingham to become a permanent fixture in the British Championship
for many years to come."
Also at Rockingham on the same weekend will be a BRSCC meet which will
include Formula Ford, VSR Championship, Super Coupe Cup and Fiat Racing
Challenge. Mark Powell said that the double billing would benefit both
championships.
"The BRSCC double-bill gives us the opportunity to piggy-back our marketing
and promotional initiatives. We understand that their event attracts a
couple of thousand spectators, hopefully we can convert some four-wheel fans
over to our unique form of two-wheel racing!"
