Gregorio Lavilla starts on pole position and Leon Haslam in second for tomorrows British Superbike Championship at Mallory Park. The Airwaves Ducati riders dominated today's qualifying session to finish first and second with best lap times of 55.375 and 55.440 respectively.
Lavilla and Haslam were the early leaders in the very hot and sunny 50 minute session switching the top spot between them during the early stages. With 30 minutes of qualifying gone Greg and Leon were the only two riders to have gone under 56 seconds. Having both put on their qualifying tyres the Ducati 999F06's went even quicker and the two fiercely competitive team mates pushed each other in and out of pole position during the last 15 minutes of the session. With 5 minutes remaining Lavilla clocked his fastest time of 55.375 which Haslam was unable to better.
Gregorio Lavilla now leads the Audi Quattro Performance Award, in which points are gained by qualifying positions; Greg has 42 points with his team mate following closely behind with 39 points.
After qualifying Leon Haslam commented, "It's great for the team that we have got one-two on the grid, I am really pleased with it. I am happy with my times; it was a good session considering it is quite hard to get a clear lap around this track. Because of the heat the track felt slippery this afternoon but the bike felt good and so did I. I am looking forward to tomorrow now; it's going to be a close race!"
Championship leader and pole position rider Gregorio Lavilla said, "My goal for today was to qualify on the front row and I am very pleased that I have done that. I did not feel that good this morning but we made some changes to the bike for this afternoon which has made it much better for me. I will try a few small changes in tomorrow mornings warm up but I feel good and I am happy to be on pole position."
"I gave it my all in qualification and thought I managed a really fast lap but it was just a fraction of a second faster than my best on race tyres. I still am not getting the best out of the qualifying tyres and that's something I need to work on.
"On race tyres my Rizla Suzuki feels mega and I want to be mixing it at the front of the pack in the races, that's what I'm here for."
