Dougie Lampkin competed in his first outdoor event of 2006 earlier today, using the opening round of the Spanish domestic series as a final shakedown prior to the start of the World outdoor series next weekend. Whilst Lampkin could only manage fourth place on the day, he was "generally happy" with the way things had gone, as he made his debut on the 2006 spec factory Repsol Montesa Cota 4RT.
With Dougie having not ridden in all the rounds of last year's Spanish championship his eighth place seeding meant he was forced to pick a starting number in front of his main rivals. A heavy overnight dew had left the lush green grass very slippery between the huge granite boulders, and with the sun overhead it was obvious that conditions were going to become much better as the day went on.
"It was impossible this morning as no one wanted to ride the sections, so it was a case of waiting as long as we dared. Even as it was we lost ten marks on time at the end of the first lap and that was after I was the first or second rider through every section. I clocked up four fives on the first lap, two were down to me still learning about the new bike and the others were through rushing."
"Whilst the result is not great, we have learnt a lot from today, both with regard to the new bike and also as a team, as it was the first time we have had James back in the squad. The good thing is that I think we are not far away from where we want to be, and given a more level playing field today, I feel we could have been far closer than we have ended up being. "
The close compact course hosted all the sections within sight of each other and was to become a battleground as the top riders fought to minimise the time penalties they all incurred as the first lap came to a close. The warm, dry weather brought far easier conditions for the second lap, with all the hazards following a similar theme and offering little variety.
Lampkin and the Repsol Montesa team will return to their Barcelona base later tonight, where they will continue with their final preparations during Monday and Tuesday before making their way across to Nigran, ready for next weekend's World series opener.
