Dougie Lampkin finished in a lowly and distant sixth place at the latest round of the 2007 World Indoor championship held in Milan, Italy late last night. This is Lampkin's worst result in his campaign to date, and leaves him trailing his team mate Fujinami by five points, and just one point ahead of Fajardo, as he clings on to fifth place in the overall standings.
After having made it on to the podium at the third round in Marseille, France, Dougie has struggled to find the same kind of form, with a run of three poor results that have seen him slip further and further away from his goal of being on the rostrum at each round.
Lampkin begun the evening well in Milan, with a clean on the opening section, a feat only matched by Raga and Fujinami, and where eventual winner and runner up, Cabestany and Bou both recorded maximums. However Dougie's delight was short lived and from that point forward his night fell apart with a series of errors that were to leave him some thirteen marks off of qualifying.
As was the case in both of the previous two rounds, held in Barcelona and Lisbon, Lampkin's tally included no less than four maximums that quickly took his total to twenty marks, and left him with no chance of making his way through to the final.
Whilst Raga dominated the heat with a clean round, it was Cabestany who took the all important victory in the final after a close three way, all-Spanish scrap. Championship leader Bou further extended his advantage at the top of the table with a runners' up position ahead of his main challenger Raga. Bou now leads the series by ten points with just three rounds remaining.
With little to show for his night's work Lampkin offered no excuses. " With the exception of the first section, it was a poor performance all round, and one that I want to move on from immediately."
Current championship standings:
- 1: Bou - 51
- 2: Raga - 41
- 3: Cabestany - 39
- 4: Fujinami - 32
- 5: Lampkin - 27
- 6: Fajardo - 26
