Monster 1000 DS, 1000S DS, 1000 Cromo
Like the 620's, these three 1000 models also differ radically in style. The Monster 1000 DS is fascinatingly styled and fully expresses the essential Monster concept, a concept that needs a high torque, high power engine to be really appreciated. The 1000S DS incorporates extra technical and stylistic details like a cockpit fairing and an aluminium swing arm normally reserved for top of the range sports motorcycles. These details are not there just for their looks but make an important contribution to reducing weight and increasing structural rigidity. The third Monster 1000 model, available in a limited edition, is dedicated to the rider who never wants to go unnoticed. Its mirror finished chrome tank gives the an cromo extremely personal look greatly appreciated by all those who love to customise naked Ducatis.
Chassis
The three 1000 cc Monsters share a number of important chassis solutions that set them apart from the Monster 620's. The 1000's allow you to modify the rear suspension height and change the bike's weight distribution to match your riding style. The basic setup is high, ensuring increased ground clearance and permitting extreme angles of lean. The rear suspension is a Sachs monoshock that is adjustable for spring preload and damping. The 1000S DS replaces the conventional steel swing arm with an aluminium swing arm, achieving a major reduction in un-sprung weight. The most sports oriented of the 1000 Monsters also has a far more advanced front end. Like other 1000 cc Monsters it is equipped with a Showa 43 mm upside down fork but this time it is fully adjustable to satisfy the needs of riders who want the best possible setup for all conditions, and in particular the right balance between front and rear end suspension action.
Engine
Only recently introduced to power the SS and Multistrada range, the 1000 DS is the most powerful and advanced of Ducati's production two valves, air cooled engines. It features twin spark ignition and delivers bags of torque even at low revs. Smooth, muscular and with an excellent speed range, the 1000 DS is the ideal engine for easy riding but when asked, turns instantly into a thoroughbred sports engine capable of exploiting the Monster's excellent trellis frame to the full. All three 1000 cc Monster models are fitted with electronic fuel injection systems with 45 mm throttle bodies and catalysed exhausts for emission levels well within the limits imposed by Euro 2 standards.
