Multistrada 1000 DS
The 1000 DS is the evolution of the bike that revolutionised motorcycling by introducing a whole new type of machine in 2004. All the qualities that riders have so appreciated are still there while the 2005 models have also improved on a number of points as suggested by owners of the first series.
The Multistrada 1000 DS is an exclusive motorcycle with advanced styling and functionality and incorporates numerous features new to the world of motorcycling, including some never previously attempted for their technical complexity. One example is the 1,100 mm single piece tank-seat assembly.
This has allowed the creation of a 20 litre tank in which fuel is distributed between the main tank chamber and a second chamber under the seat. Other shared details making the entire Multistrada range unique, include the two section cockpit fairing that gives far better than average steering manoeuvrability and the decidedly sporty looking tail that houses the exhaust silencer with its twin tail pipes. All these details incorporate innovative technical solutions like the valve between the two tank chambers, that ensures correct internal air flow to guarantee a progressive reduction in fuel level. Another unique feature is the front headlight cluster that guarantees perfect illumination under all load conditions thanks to its electronic beam height adjustment and gives the front of the Multistrada such a unique appearance.
The 1000 DS also incorporates all the latest modifications introduced to satisfy owner requests, including a cockpit fairing that gives better protection at speed, and a new shape seat with improved density and thickness of padding. The position of the rear view mirrors has been improved, too. Without altering the previous design, the mirrors have been moved outwards by 40 millimetres for better visibility.
Colour schemes remain red, silver and black, as for 2004.
The Multistrada's tubular trellis frame merges features of the Superbike family with others of the Sport Touring range. The overall dimensions are very similar to those of the Superbike frame, as is the almost identical steering head rake angle and seat height. The fast Sport Touring family has donated other similarities like their reduced width and reduced distance between seat and handlebar. Overall length and ground clearance on the other hand are original, making Multistrada a totally unique machine, with a riding position that makes full use of its excellent handling on all types of road. A 1,460 mm wheelbase has been adopted in conjunction with a weight distribution (with rider) of 47 % at the front wheel and 53 % at the rear, to give the bike the agility necessary to ensure a fantastic ride.
The 1000 DS suspension has been chosen exclusively for their sports performance. This can be clearly seen from the 43 mm upside down front fork and rear monoshock. Both are Showa units and both are adjustable in compression and rebound. Other features shared with Ducati's sport machines include the single sided swing arm and braking system. The 1000 DS' brakes have all the feel and performance of SBK braking systems.
The engine of the Multistrada 1000 DS is the latest two valve desmodromic twin. This brand new engine design reduces toxic emissions while still guaranteeing excellent power and torque and an extended engine speed range. The 1000 DS' power unit is the most advanced of Ducati's production air cooled units, and boasts twin spark ignition to optimise combustion and keep emissions well within Euro2 standards. Like all the latest Ducatis, the Multistrada uses CAN bus technology with just two wires for dialog between the engine control unit and instrument panel. This brings a dramatic saving in weight and makes for far quicker and easier assembly and servicing.
