2006 BMW R1200 ST
The BMW R1200 ST is a replacement for the R1150 RS, which was one of the most successful BMW boxer twins of recent years. With a particularly loyal customer base, the RS was voted Britain's number one machine - the overall winner of RiDE magazine's 2003 Rider Power survey. The R1200 ST - Sports Tourer - retains the original's groundbreaking versatility and rideability but provides more power, better handling, less weight, improved aerodynamics and increased weather protection.
In fact, the R1200 ST is the epitome of BMW's new design and engineering philosophy to build faster, lighter, more powerful and, ultimately, more rewarding motorcycles to ride. Designed uncompromisingly for road riding, it does not sacrifice any of the legendary features that BMW Motorrad regards as important. These include unchallengeable road holding, industry-leading safety, magnificent ergonomics, unrivalled comfort levels, true reliability and high resale values.
The R1200 ST uses the same engine as the all-conquering R1200 GS albeit a more powerful derivative. The R1200 GS has received outstanding praise for its on- and off-road capability but as a pure touring motorcycle, with a genuine sporting capability, the new R1200 ST is a definitive road bike.
The R1200 ST is a long distance sprinter that offers the best of both worlds - sporting and touring. High levels of touring comfort are matched with effortless agility for everyday riding and outstanding handling dynamics on all surfaces. The four-valve flat-twin engine delivers 110 hp (a 15 hp increase over its predecessor) and a massive 115Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm.
Superior ride quality is provided for rider and passenger via lightweight suspension unique to BMW Motorrad. Industry-advanced aerodynamics offer outstanding weather protection and supreme stability even in gale force winds. As you'd expect on a machine that offers the rider a choice of active sporty riding, or relaxed touring, many components on the new ST are adjustable. These include the screen, handlebars, footrests, seat, and brake and clutch levers.
Immediately following the launch of BMW Motorrad's fully equipped R1200 RT touring machine, the R1200 ST has been designed to capture a new market share of riders that want a motorcycle capable of covering long distances in comfort but without sacrificing the dynamism, agility and excitement associated with sports riding.
The R1200 ST is priced from £9,095 on the road. It is available in a number of duo-tone colour schemes such as Light Magnesium Metallic with a choice of Sydney Blue Metallic, Granite Grey Metallic or Piemont Red Metallic finishes; or Dark Graphite Metallic, also with a choice of Sydney Blue Metallic, Granite Grey Metallic or Piemont Red Metallic finishes.

Technical and special features;
The R1200 ST sports tourer - lighter, more powerful and more agile
The R1200 ST is the epitome of sports touring on a BMW Boxer.
As successor to the R1150 RS, the 1200cc flat-twin is the third model in the current BMW Box-er generation (the first machine, the R1200 GS, was launched in spring 2004).
The R1200 ST has based its development on the drive train and innovative suspension - features that were seen for the first time on the R1200 GS. The "ST" designation stands for sports tourer.
The design and configuration of the R1200 ST is derived from the
R1200 RT (introduced in January 2005). The description "Sports" in the machine's model name is deliberate and appropriate.
An increase in engine output (compared with its predecessor) of 16 per cent, to 81kW (110 hp), and a dry weight reduction to 205kg will make the ST ideal for riders who enjoy the versatility of touring and sports riding combined. The new machine is perfectly suited to winding country roads, has sufficient power for fast riding, and will be ergonomically suited to long distance touring.
The R1200 ST is intended to appeal to sports-minded touring riders with ambitious motorcycling demands and requirements. Excellent handling and riding characteristics combined with comfortable and sporting ergonomics will allow an enthusiastic riding style - even over long distances. As is BMW custom, a wide range of equipment and accessories is available and will meet all the needs and preferences of individual riders.
The R1200 ST is set to create new standards for sports motorcycle touring with the addition of high levels of comfort and safety.
The most important features of the new R1200 ST;
Dry weight in road trim 205kg (452lb) - or 229kg (505lb) with a full tank.
Air-cooled, flat-twin power unit displacing 1170cc and featuring a newly aligned balance shaft.
More power and performance: 81kW (110 hp) maximum output and 115NM (85 lb-ft) maximum torque.
Electronic BMS-K engine management features dual ignition and anti-knock control.
Fully-controlled, three-way catalytic converter with two oxygen sensors.
Six-speed gearbox with helical gears.
Innovative on-board network with CAN-bus technology.
Highly stable, lightweight frame of tubular construction.
Lightweight Paralever with weight-optimised drive-shaft and
adjustable TDD spring strut.
Extra-stiff Telelever to ensure a smooth and comfortable ride.
New cast wheels.
EVO brakes with BMW Motorrad Integral ABS (part-integrated version) available as an option
Fuel tank made from special, extra-strong synthetic material - 21 litres (4.6 Imp gal) capacity for long range.
Mechanical windscreen adjustment.
Handlebars adjustable for height.
Two-piece, adjustable seat (two versions) and seat height -ranging from 780-830mm (30.7-32.6´´).
Power unit - even more output;
The all-new, 1170 cc flat-twin power unit features a balance shaft and was first seen on the R1200 GS. However, the R1200 ST engine offers a greater power output (compared with its predecessor and the R1200 GS) of 81kW (110 hp). The R1200 ST shares its engine with the R1200 RT.
The extra power (versus the R1200 GS) comes from a 500 rpm increase in engine speed to 7,500 rpm, a different intake system, new silencers, and modified camshafts. Higher pistons have also been used to give the unit an increase in the geometric compression ratio to 12:1.
Featuring BMS-K electronic engine management and boasting anti-knock control and oxygen sensors to control the fuel/air mixture individually for each cylinder, the R1200 ST (and RT) carry the technological leadership of the new Boxer generation into the touring motorcycle segment. As on the GS, the latest generation of engine electronics combines automatic idle speed control with an automatic cold start function.
Anti-knock control enables the motorcycle to run on fuel grades as low as 95 RON without suffering damage - although the engine is designed for 98 RON. The only difference is that 95 RON gives a slight decrease in engine output. Precise adjustment of the fuel/air mixture to each cylinder, together with the high compression ratio and dual ignition, ensures a high level of fuel economy. The R1200 ST consumes only 5.1 litres per 100km (a return of 55.3 mpg Imp) at a steady 120 km/h (75 mph).
A fully controlled, three-way catalytic converter provides outstanding environmental compatibility by offering the latest generation of exhaust gas management - industry-leading technical features characteristic of BMW Motorrad for many years.
The transmission - an extra-short sixth gear allows more active riding
An all-new development on the R1200 GS - the helical-gear transmission, weighing only 13kg (28.7lb) - is also featured in the R1200 ST. The gearbox has been further improved by detailed optimisation of the shift mechanism. Extra-short travel between individual gears enables smooth and precise shifting. Designed for sports riding, sixth gear is particularly short and dynamic.
In all, the optimal gear increments allow fast acceleration from 0-62 mph in an impressive 3.5 seconds.
The frame - re-designed using proven BMW technology
The two-piece main/rear tubular steel space-frame combines maximum
stiffness with supreme strength. Naturally, it retains the weight-saving truss structure already featured on the R1200 GS - incorporating the engine as a load-bearing unit. The particular structural configuration of the new ST required a new frame design based largely on that of the R1200 RT.
The front frame is a welded steel structure and the rear frame is made from straight steel tubes welded together. As on all eight-valve Boxers, the front and rear frame are bolted to the engine/gearbox unit and jointly form the load-bearing structure. The longitudinal arm, incorporated in the front-wheel Telelever, rests on the engine block and the Paralever swinging arm pivots on the rear frame.
Telelever front-wheel suspension - a stiffer lightweight construction;
Stiff front-wheel suspension is crucial to a road-going motorcycle with sporting qualities and is one of the prerequisites of precise handling and clear feedback. As on the R1200 GS, the Telelever has a fixed tube measuring 41mm (1.61´´) in diameter. The maintenance-free system is designed to reduce brake dive to virtually zero and contributes to greater stability when applying the brakes and while leaning into bends. Front-wheel spring travel is 110mm, or 4.33´´.
Rear-wheel guidance and suspension - the Evo-Paralever and TDD spring strut;
The lightweight drive-shaft includes the BMW Motorrad Paralever (Evo-Paralever) and is barely heavier than a conventional swinging arm with drive chain. Apart from modifications required for wider tyres, the wheel guidance system has been completely carried over from the R1200 GS. Despite its lower weight, the entire unit is stiffer than on the former model.
Situating the support bar (for absorbing forces) on the rear wheel drive housing above the swinging arm, helps provide extra ground clearance. The 10 per cent reduction in weight (versus the former model) also reduces unsurprising masses. The advantage for the rider is a smooth and sensitive response at all times, with load change reactions reduced to a minimum.
A further advantage is the lifetime fluid filling - there is no need to change the transmission fluid for the entire life of the motorcycle.
The rear central spring strut on the Paralever swinging arm incorporates
travel-dependent damper technology (referred to as TDD) ensuring
progressive damping as a function of spring travel. The suspension therefore responds smoothly and comfortably to even the small-est bumps in the road. At the same time it offers generous reserves for bad roads and tracks with grooves along the surface, or very uneven top structures. With spring travel at the rear measuring 140mm (5.51´´). The
spring strut system was featured for the first time in 2002 on the
R1150 GS Adventure.
Wheels and tyres - new five-spoke light-alloy cast wheels;
Newly developed for the R1200 ST and R 1200 RT, the extra-light cast aluminium wheels, in five-spoke design, combine the advantage of easy care with superior strength and stiffness. The front wheel measures 3.5 x 17 inches, the rear wheel 5.5 x 17. Tyre dimensions are 120/70 ZR17 at the front and 180/55 ZR17 at the rear.
Brakes - EVO brake system with partly integrated ABS option for safe and dependable deceleration;
The proven EVO brake system featuring BMW Motorrad Integral ABS (available as an option) offers supreme safety under all conditions. Like the R1200 RT, the new R1200 ST comes exclusively with the partly integral version of ABS for an even more active style of riding. Maximum easily controlled deceleration, using minimum brake power, gives the rider additional safety - especially when braking in an emergency.
The diameter of the front brake discs is 320mm (12.6´´). To reduce un-sprung masses and allow an even higher standard of braking precision, the diameter of the rear brake disc now measures 265mm (10.4´´) as opposed to 276mm (10.9´´) on the former model.
Woven steel cladding on the brake hoses and brake callipers (stiffer than
on the former model) offer a slight decrease in weight and a more precisely defined, consistently stable, brake pressure point.
On-board network - enhanced functions based on CAN-bus technology;
The new electrical network ensures a high standard of reliability plus an even wider range of functions using fewer cables than before. The Single Wire System, introduced for the first time on the R1200 GS, transmits all relevant data via a single wire to the respective control units. Physically though, it is a double-wire CAN-bus (Controller Area Network) technology system, consistently interconnecting all control units and central vehicle electronics (CVE) to form a permanent data network with the various units exchanging data.
Apart from a simpler design for the main wiring harness, it also allows efficient, comprehensive diagnosis of all relevant vehicle functions.
A further advantage is that the system no longer needs conventional
meltdown fuses. CAN-bus technology automatically switches off a faulty
component whenever necessary and checks whether the function is still defective when the rider next starts the motorcycle.
The network also feeds all data to the cockpit display on the info-flat-screen. To more easily adapt electronic accessories and ensure simple integration in the onboard network, there is also a plug for special equipment.
The low-weight alternator supplying the energy required by the motorcycle has an output of 720W at 60 amps. The battery is maintenance-free and has a capacity of 19 ampere-hours.
Electronic immobiliser featured as standard;
BMW Motorrad's electronic immobiliser is an integral part of the onboard network. To make life difficult for the potential thief, this security system offers the best technology currently available that will prevent unauthorised use of the machine. The 'authorised' rider benefits from a supreme standard of convenience: all that needs to be done is pull the key out of the ignition and the immobiliser then intervenes in the engine management software and deactivates fuel-injection and ignition. As soon as the engine is next started, a chip in the key compares its data with the engine management data to determine compliance. Once the proper match has been established, the engine control unit switches on the ignition and the rider can start the engine.
Instruments - everything clear and in sight;
The easy-to-read, all-new instrument panel is exactly in the rider's line of vi-sion and provides a clear view of all relevant functions at all times. Carried over from the R1200 GS, the control panel comprises a round speedometer, slightly oval rev counter, and an information display to the right of the speedometer that provides permanent information on the oil temperature, tank level, the range of fuel remaining in the tank, the time of day, and the gear selected. Current overall and trip mileage are available on demand. Any malfunctions are also displayed, along with appropriate warnings.
The entire instrument panel is in digital technology. However, road and engine speeds are indicated with needles on analogue dials.
Headlight unit - clear glass-style and free-form technology;
To meet growing demands for optimum illumination, the main headlight incorporates free-form surface technology featuring geometrically optimised surface contours. Two H4 headlights in vertical arrangement and featuring reflectors for the dual low and high beams ensure excellent illumination and give the R1200 ST an unmistakable and unique face.
Height-adjustable handlebar and seat for appropriate seating positions;
A particular feature of the R1200 ST is the short handlebar, which is adjustable for height on a vertical fixed tube. An overall travel adjustment of 25mm (0.98´´) provides the rider with exactly the right body posture - crouched low for a sporting style of riding, or higher for a more relaxed touring style. Along with the variation in seat height, the adjustments allow a high degree of individual body freedom.
Control and electric switches - as on the R1200 GS;
The controls and switches first introduced on the R1200 GS are also featured on the R1200 ST. For example, the grab width on the clutch and brake levers is variable. BMW's typical layout of switches and direction indicator control has also been retained because of its many proven virtues.
The hydraulic clutch system comes with a lifetime filling and is maintenance-free.
Bodywork structure - sporting and dynamic but with appropriate comfort standards;
The new sports tourer is dynamic, agile and suitably comfortable - all at the same time. The clear lines and striking surfaces combine with a perfect finish to exude class and perfection. The dual-headlight dominates the frontal area with sharp contours that give the new motorcycle a truly individual look.
Subdivided into two sweeping sections, the bodywork (or fairing) conveys a powerful impression of potent performance and light handling. The overall design concept and configuration (with various colour schemes on the fairing components and front wheel mudguard) deliberately enhances this image.
The R1200 ST is available in three basic colours: Sydney Blue Metallic, Piemont Red Metallic, and Granite Grey Metallic. The upper section of the fairing and the front wheel mudguard are finished in contrasting colours, offering the customer a choice of Light Magnesium Metallic or Dark Graphite Metallic. The highly attractive colour combinations give the machine a very personal, individual touch. The seat is finished in black, irrespective of colour combination.
The windscreen on the R1200 ST has three different positions. These are conveniently adjustable by manual control to ensure optimum protection from wind and rain and exhibit a surprisingly low degree of noise.
Starting from its lowest position, the windshield may be set to a higher position in two steps of 20mm (almost 0.8´´) to give exactly the right position.
The seat and seating position - superior and comfortable ergonomics;
The new, extremely comfortable seat of the R1200 ST is split up into two sections - with manual height adjustment of the rider's section - either 810mm or 830mm (31.9´´ and 32.7´´´). A lower seat is available as an option and will adjust to a level of either 780 or 800mm (30.7 or 31.5´´).
The particular layout and configuration of the 'ergonomics triangle' made up of the footrests, seat, and handlebars, ensures a particularly active or comfortable seating position and provides the rider and passenger with a very comfortable and con-venient knee-bending angle. By giving the rider exactly the right step arch length - the distance between the rider's feet, over the motorcycle and across the seat - a short rider will be able to reach the ground with his or her feet much more easily and conveniently. To provide absolute perfection, the step arch length considers not only the absolute height of the seat, but also the shape and width of the rider's seat section.
Equipment features - the side and main stands;
A new side stand with engine cut-out function keeps the motorcycle securely in place on any surface and is easy to operate. The side stand extends easily with the rider in the seating position. A main (or centre) stand is available as an option.
Range of Equipment;
Optional extras and special equipment;
BMW Motorrad's usual wide range of optional extras and special equipment tailored specifically to the R1200 ST and, of course, the customer's requirements, enables further customisation. Optional extras come straight from the factory and are integrated during the actual production of the motorcycle on the assembly line in Berlin. However, special equipment is fitted by the BMW motorcycle dealership, from new, or at a later date.

Luggage rack, top box and motorcycle pannier cases;
Newly designed case support rails are integrated into the motorcycle and come as standard. The top box and motorcycle cases are optional. The cases are the same as on the new R1200 RT and feature the same high-quality four-point locking system. This keeps the cover in exactly the right position and reliably keeps out water. Capacity is 32 litres per case.
The cases are made of special black synthetic material. The covers - unlike those on the R1200 RT - are not painted.
The grab rail for the passenger is specially designed for taking a luggage rack (as an optional extra) and for subsequently mounting the top box. With a capacity of 28 litres, the top box is able to accommodate one hel-met.
The watertight main compartment in the tank rucksack has a capacity of approximately 13 litres and may be enlarged to 19 litres. Beneath the map folder there is an additional pocket for small bits and pieces, such as keys, purse, sunglasses, etc. The inner bag section keeps out water and makes the use of an additional cover superfluous - even in heavy rain. The map section is also watertight.
BMW Motorrad Navigator II;
Reading a map was yesterday. Today, all the rider has to do is select an address, a city, a special sight, or a particular point en route, and the BMW Motorrad Navigator II will guide the rider to the destination safe and sound, providing detailed instructions along the way. The Navigator II offers three options for reaching a destination: the fastest route; the shortest; or (as far as possible) the "straightest" route (as the crow flies).
Map presentation is also variable. It offers the choice of using only a map; a combination of map and instructions; a road book, and a compass function, which shows the rider the distance and direction to a selected point en route. A zoom function ensures quick and convenient orientation at road junctions, with optional voice messages in nine languages transmitted via the helmet.
