2006 Ducati Monster S2R 1000
The arrival of the S2R 1000 revolutionised the range. The event sees the departure of the two previous models in this engine size, and the dual-spark twin cylinder powerplant is installed on a Monster that reaps loads of benefits in terms of grit and personality. To complete this new Monster proposal Ducati has developed an advanced version of the chassis, designed to enhance the sports performance of a truly superb engine.
With respect to the 2005 model, with the '06 range Ducati proposes just one 1000 cc Monster although the characteristics of this machine are decidedly more exclusive from all angles, starting from the looks.
The main style elements are taken directly from the SR versions, starting from the racing stripe, which has become a hallmark feature of the entire SR Monster family. In the case of the S2R 1000, a brand new colour scheme has been introduced, with grey paintwork and black stripe and wheels, joining the classic red or black versions, both of which feature a white racing stripe. In addition to the specific colour scheme, the new Monster version features another distinctive element in its carbon fibre side panels. But in a bike that combines a bare essential style with a host of exclusive details, many of the strictly technical components acquire an important role in creating the overall aesthetic appeal of the machine. This category inevitably includes the twin vertically stacked silencers (in a specific version) that emerge from the right-hand side of the seat, and, above all, the handsome single-sided swingarm in an aluminium tubular structure that characterises all SR Monster machines.
The S2R 1000 Monster allows the rider to get the most from the power and flexibility of the twin-cylinder dual valve power plant thanks also to the chassis designed specifically to maximise rideability and safety. In this context, a series of components with dedicated characteristics have been installed on the basic setup shared by all bikes in the "single-sided swingarm" family. With respect to the 800 cc version, the 1000 features a specific and more powerful braking system: a pair of 320 mm discs on the front wheel, with four-piston callipers and a PSC master cylinder with separate reservoir, and a 245 mm disc with two-piston calliper on the rear wheel. Also the Showa upside-down fork with full adjustment of preload and damping is tailored for this specific version of the Monster, while the rear monoshock is made by Sachs and is of the same type installed on the 800 cc model. Also the handlebar levers are fully adjustable.
The twin cylinder engine of the S2R 1000 is the same powerplant installed on the Supersport and Multistrada families and already present on the Monster 1000. However, with respect to the existing edition, the 95 HP dual spark engine has been given a series of important updates that make it even more flexible and generous in all riding conditions. For this engine the twin exhaust features specific layout designed to emphasise the already superb torque output, which is readily available starting from surprisingly low revs. Also, the manual choke of the earlier versions has been replaced by an automatic valve designed to make cold starts even faster, even in the most inclement climates. The air-cooled desmo engine has also been integrated with a series of solutions to keep exhaust emissions to incredibly low levels. Thanks to these new exhaust features, the S2R 1000 is the first Monster machine to obtain Euro3 homologation. Another record for an engine that has been widely acclaimed for its characteristics of flexibility and extended power delivery, which adapts effortlessly to all riding styles, mastering the road on unhurried cruises or turning heads with gut-wrenching bursts of acceleration.
