2012 Derbi Variant Sport
Variant Sport is the new high wheel
introduction from Derbi, born from the Piaggio Group's
great skill in the scooter world. It combines –
with an all Spanish style – functionality, economy
and a sport look in line with the tradition of the
manufacturer from Martorelles.
Available with two different engines,
50 2T and 125 4T, Variant Sport is an entry-level
intended to meet the most varied urban mobility needs
of young teenagers as well as adults, providing brilliant
performance and great reliability at contained costs.
Equipped with 14” wheels which transmit great
confidence and safety in riding, Derbi Variant Sport
places as a full fledged member of the competitive
segment of high wheel scooters: agile, quick and fun,
it is the perfect scooter for moving quickly through
heavy traffic in complete safety; an ideal entry-level
for those who need to gain experience with a safe
and efficient vehicle, easy to ride and brilliant
at the same time.
With a saddle height of just 775 cm, Variant Sport
ensures safe footing for any size rider, making it
easy to manage even for the very young and female
riders, who will also appreciate the significant ease
of handling and fluid ride.
There are numerous details which contribute to the
young and exciting look of the Derbi Variant Sport,
from the saddle covering with racing flavour stitching
to the gritty gloss black wheels, emphasised by sporty
and minimalist graphics.
Chassis and outfitting
Designed with maximum rationality in mind, the chassis
of the Variant Sport is a classic open cradle structure
in high resistance steel piping where a 32 mm diameter
telescopic hydraulic fork (85 mm wheel travel) and
a rear single shock absorber with adjustable preload
and 84 mm wheel travel (76mm on the 50 cc version)
work.
The ample suspension travel provides one of the highest
ground clearances in its category, allowing the rider
to take on any road surface without problems, filtering
uneven surfaces in the best possible way.
Derbi Variant Sport mounts a pair of 14 inch wheels
equipped with generously sized tubeless tyres (120/70
for each): a choice which contributes to conveying
stability, easy of handling and excellent rideability
to make it an easy and intuitive scooter which anyone
can handle.
The 220 mm front disc, with a two piston floating
calliper, provides immediate deceleration and is supported
well by the reliable 140 mm rear drum: a perfect combination
for mainly city use.
It is precisely in the city that the Variant Sport
gives the best of itself and flaunts all of the peculiarities
which make it not only perfect for moving through
traffic and "stop and go" trips, but also
comfortable for the rider and easy to load. Besides
its large and comfortable saddle and a balanced and
comfortable riding position, Derbi Variant Sport boasts
a spacious helmet compartment which can hold a flip
up helmet and which, combined with a comfortable flat
footrest and the bag hook, ensures a load capacity
worthy of a much larger scooter.
Engines
Derbi Variant Sport is available with two different
engines: The quick and agile 50 cc 2 stroke and the
high performance and flexible 125 4 stroke, both with
forced air cooling systems and fine tuned to obtain
maximum reliability and fuel economy, ideal qualities
for daily use in urban environments.
In fact, a maximum power of 10.6 HP and an extremely
favourable torque range allow the Derbi Variant Sport
125 to move easily through traffic even on fast flowing
roads. Even riders who only have a class B driving
license can ride the Variant Sport, a 125 which is
agile and quick, but always attentive to fuel economy.
Variant Sport 50 is the top rate urban vehicle which
combines dynamism and practicality in the beating
heart of just 50cc. The brilliant two stroke engine,
capable of more than 4 HP, makes the Variant Sport
50 light and quick, confirming the “sprinter”
qualities of the engine and an optimum calibration
of the automatic transmission.
