UK market positioning for the new BMW K 1200 R

The new K 1200 R roadster is a muscle bike that owes its allegiance to nothing that has gone before. It is not a replacement for any other machine and represents a revolution in the unfaired bike sector. It has power and styling not previously associated with BMW Motorrad and is yet another 'new generation' model in the BMW range to change people's perception of the brand.

BMW's most powerful and aggressively styled naked street bike, the 163 hp K 1200 R has been uncompromisingly devised for road riding. Equipped with the same engine (and digital motor electronics) as the formidable K 1200 S superbike, the new roadster delivers corresponding levels of comfort, ride quality, safety, and environmental consideration.

Visually, the copies nothing and leads everything. The roadster's aggressive aesthetics are a synthesis of world-leading aerodynamics and original thinking. But they are practical too. The level of performance achieved by the K 1200 R would be pointless without the capability to sustain it.

A motorcycle that delivers such outstanding performance must also be safe, and the K 1200 R is one of the safest machines available. A low centre of gravity ensures remarkable maneuverability at slow speeds and less 'edgy' handling at high speeds. Sports Integral ABS and Electronic Suspension Adjustment options ensure that the roadster requires less rider input than its contemporaries. Despite its substantial power output, the K 1200 R's safety features attract favourable rates from BMW Insurance. This is backed by the industry's most comprehensive after-market support and a vast array of options and accessories.

From 9,395 on the road, the K 1200 R is a road bike without compromise, and is destined to attract considerable conquest sales.

Concept of the new BMW K 1200 R

BMW Motorrad proudly presents the most powerful series production roadster currently available in the world - the new K 1200 R.

Featuring advanced technology and design previously seen on the K 1200 S, the radically different muscle bike will set new standards in its market segment. With an ultra-modern 120kW (163 hp) four-cyl-inder engine, suspension and running gear designed and built without compro-mise - for supreme riding dynamics - outstanding innovations such as the BMW Duolever and ESA, and a highly ad-vanced on-board electrical and electronic network, the K 1200 R sets a highly individual benchmark for performance sports roadsters.

Because of its extrovert and futuristic design, the K 1200 R marks a new approach beyond the conventional. Following the quantum leap (in all areas) achieved by the K 1200 S, the new K series Roadster has become another standard-bearing model in the BMW motorcycle range. Combining the precision and advantages of high technology, superior power and performance with a touch of purism, the new K 1200 R is truly unique - a new generation machine typical of BMW Motorrad's current philosophy of producing lighter, faster, more agile motorcycles.

BMW Motorrad's focus with the K 1200 R - as with all BMW motorcycles - is not short term or with only 'fashionable' appeal to sustain it. The ob-jec-tive is to give the rider added value and practical 'real world' benefits as well as the latest technological developments. A comprehensive range of options and accessories, which enhance the practical value of the new street machine, complements this philosophy.

Optimum environmental compatibility is ensured by ultra-modern exhaust gas management, which incorporates a fully controlled three-way catalytic converter. Supreme active safety, as provided by the advanced Integral ABS in conjunction with a high-performance EVO brake system, is unique to BMW.

Technical features and design

Technically, the K 1200 R is derived from the K 1200 S high performance machine with modifications to only a few features. The drivetrain, running gear, brakes and on-board network have all been carried over from the K 1200 S. The new body and equipment, and truly exceptional futuristic design, make the K 1200 R a brand-new and quite different motorcycle to others in its segment. Weighing only 237 kilos or 523lb (wet weight with a full tank but without ABS) the K 1200 R is the embodiment of BMW Motorrad's new generation models that offer supe-rior handling and manoeuvrability - especially at low speeds, on country roads, and in towns.

Slender and compact, the straight-four power unit displaces 1157cc, which is the same as the engine of the K 1200 S. Other engine data is also similar: the new Roadster develops a slightly lower peak output of 120kW (163 hp) at the same engine speed of 10,250 rpm, with maximum torque of 127Nm (94 lb-ft) delivered at 8,250 rpm.

Mechanically, the engine of the K 1200 R is identical to that of the K 1200 S and has the same camshaft configuration and valve timing. The flow of intake air has been modified for the new machine and features just one 'snorkel' leading to the airbox on the right-hand side. The modified flow of intake air is the reason for the slightly lower level of maximum power and torque. The silencer and ex-haust manifold systems both come from the K 1200 S.

The transmission is also unchanged from the K 1200 S. However, at 2.91:1 (instead of 2.82:1 on the K 1200 S) the drive-train final drive ratio has been adjusted to the reduced the top speed of the 'naked' motorcycle. This is because of the machine's higher drag coefficient.

Suspension and running gear

The suspension and running gear are slightly modified on the new model. The Duolever has a somewhat steeper angle (0.4) and the steering head angle has been changed to 61, with camber 11mm (0.43in) shorter at 101mm (3.98in). The change in suspension geometry has been achieved by a minor alteration in the machining of bearing points on the Duolever.

The positive effect of the modified suspension geometry results in even better handl-ing, particularly at low speeds. Any theoretical repercussions on direc-tional stability at high speeds (versus the K 1200 S) are unnoticeable and irrelevant on a motorcycle without a fairing and with a somewhat lower top speed.

The K 1200 R comes as standard with wheels of the same design as those found on the new R 1200 ST. Wheel dimensions are 3.5in x 17 at the front and 5.5in x 17 at the rear when using tyres measuring 120/70-ZR17 and, respectively, 180/55-ZR17. The customer also has the option of K 1200 S sports wheels measuring 3.5in x 17 at the front and 6.0 in x 17 at the rear (the rear tyre designation is 190/50-ZR17).

BMW Motorrad's Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA) is also available as an optional extra. Introduced for the first time on the K 1200 S and now also available on the R 1200 RT, this world-first enables a rider to adjust the suspension from the handlebars - at the touch of a button - an operation that can be performed while riding.

ESA varies inbound damping on the front wheel, and inbound and re-bound damping on the rear wheel. The rider also has the ability to adjust the rear-wheel spring base electrohydraulically while the motorcycle is at standstill (i.e. for different payloads).

Spring travel on the K 1200 R is the same as on the K 1200 S sports machine, measuring 115mm (4.52in) at the front and 135mm (5.31in) at the rear.

Brakes - high-performance EVO brake system and Integral ABS as an option

The K 1200 R is equipped with BMW's EVO brake system (featured on all K Series and flat-twin models). In configuration and dimensions the brake system - with disc brake diameters of 320mm (12.60in) at the front and 265mm (10.43in) at the rear - is the same as on the K 1200 S. The brake hoses are steel-clad for additional safety and reliability.

The BMW EVO brake system (EVO stands for evolution) is one of the safest and most effective brake systems in the world.

As another optional extra, the EVO brake system is available with Sports Integral ABS. This means that both brakes (front and rear) are acti-vated by the hand lever, while the footbrake lever acts only on the rear wheel.

Even when applying maximum pressure on the brakes, the rider of the K 1200 R has less chance of losing control thanks to the motorcycle's low centre of gravity and the special suspension geometry, which interacts with the kinematic configuration of the Duolever. In other words, with ABS, the rider benefits un-der virtually all conditions from maximum tyre adhesion when applying the brakes with ultimate force. This ensures best possible safety even in the most extreme situations.

Controls and instrumentation

The handlebar and the handlebar bridge on the K 1200 R are both new. Com-pared with the K 1200 S, the handlebar is wider and higher. As appropriate for a motorcycle of this type, the rider's seating position is more upright and further to the front. Oval rear-view mirrors are attached to the handlebar.

The instrument cluster, with speedometer and rev counter, is based on the same concept as the in-stru-ment cluster of the R1200 GS. However, the instrument dials are new. As on the K 1200 S, the displays in the info-flatscreen provide ongoing infor-mation on coolant temperature, fuel level, time, and the gear currently engaged. On machines equipped with optional ESA, the info-flatscreen provides additional information on the current sus-pension set-up. Total mileage, trip mileage, and the range of the fuel remaining in the tank are all available by pressing a button.

Electrics and electronics

Boasting a wide range of innovations, the on-board network in CAN-bus tech-nology (Controller Area Network) has been transferred from the K 1200 S without modification. The ad-vantages of this technology are a far wider range of available functions (compared with conventional on-board networks) and much simpler and more straightforward cable connections, absence of conventional meltdown fuses, and full-scale diagnostic management and examination options.

A fully integrated electronic immobiliser is standard equipment and consistently exchanges coded and frequently changing data between the motorcycle key (by means of a transponder) and the on-board electronic system. This is the best and safest immobiliser currently available, ensuring that only the authorised rider has access to the machine.

Design and body

Cosmetically, the K 1200 R looks predatory, aggressive and athletic. The underlying philosophy in creating the machine was to minimise all features down to the essen-tial and achieve an emotional symbiosis.

Such minimalist design places the focus on visible technical features and components, such as the drivetrain and suspension, and for highlighting BMW's claim to leadership in technology and innovation. With its muscular and unashamedly masculine look, the K 1200 R clearly emphasises - even at standstill - the performance and dynam-ics of what is currently the most powerful roadster in the world.

Not surprisingly, the design will provoke contradictory discussion and opin-ion. But, it would not have been appropriate - given the demanding standards of BMW Motorrad - to endow a motorcycle of this calibre with anything but classic beauty fused with modern concepts.

While the heritage of the K 1200 R and its close ties to the K 1200 S is ob-vious - both motorcycles share the same sweeping contour lines on the fuel tank and seat - the K 1200 R goes much further in its styl-ing features. The machine's contours and shapes are even more distinc-tive, making the K 1200 R a truly striking, unmistakable and visually unique motorcycle. This design philosophy is continued by the side covers at the front of the fuel tank, which take up and extend a consistent line to the front end (and the oil cooler fairing beneath the striking double headlight).

Despite its compact dimensions, the small air deflector above the headlight significantly reduces wind pressure at high speeds.

The reflectors of the dual headlight system come in free-form sur-face technology and are housed beneath extra-clear, impact- and scratch-proof, lightweight polycarbonate covers. Finished in matt chrome, the head-light housing is made of a special synthetic material to accentuate the technical character of the motorcycle.

The Duolever has plastic covers at the side to emulate the basic de-sign of the wheel bearings. At the same time these covers guide the flow of cool air to the radiator.

The K 1200 R is available in a range of powerful looking colours that have character and style. Dark Graphite metallic, for example, forms a strong contrast to the drivetrain and running gear, which is finished in silver. This highlights the technical and aesthetic qualities of the new machine. White Aluminium metallic, on the other hand, combines with the drivetrain and running gear (in black) to enhance the contrasts of the K 1200 R and give greater emphasis to the contours of the motorcycle and its muscular shape.

To complement the colour combinations, the wheels are finished in Slate Grey metallic matt. Another particularly striking colour scheme is Sun Yellow non-metallic, with the drivetrain and running gear in black and the wheels in Slate Grey metallic matt. Despite the paintwork options, the seat is in black on all models.

Fuel tank and seat

The fuel tank of the K 1200 R is made of extra-light, impact-resistant syn-thetic material and offers a capacity of 19 litres (almost 4.2 Imp gals) includ-ing four litres in reserve. The overall configuration of the K 1200 R - as with all BMW Motorrad models - serves to keep the tank par-tic-ularly slender in front of the rider, thus ensuring optimum knee contact.

Similar in its basic design, the seat is more slender than on the K 1200 S in order to create an even more forward-oriented, active riding position. The rider's absolute geometric seat height is 820mm (32.3in) with a step-arch length of 1,810mm (71.3in). A low-level seat, which is avail-able as a no-cost option, measures 790mm (31.1in) in height with 1,750mm (68.9in) step-arch length. The lower seat can also be re-trofitted as special equipment.

Range of equipment

Although the K 1200 R is comfortably at home in an urban environment it is - like all BMW motorcycles - perfectly suited to long distance riding and touring.

There are also many experienced riders who prefer the classic concept of motorcycling and enjoy being in harmony with the environment; riders that want to enjoy a direct experience on their motorcycle and are happy to do so without a fairing. However, even on BMW's new Roadster they need appropriate solutions for holiday baggage and other travel items.

This is precisely why the K 1200 R is available with sports cases carried over from the K 1200 S. The specially designed luggage combines superior function with sporting design and reflect the sporting character of the new high-per-formance Roadster. Combining textile and hard material, the luggage is an integrated addition to the machine and, using the racks already fitted to the motorcycle, can be mounted and removed within a matter of seconds.

Loading space is variable. This extends from 17 litres per case in normal configuration to 25 litres when each case is fully expanded. The fully inte-grated inner bags are obviously watertight.

The sports wind deflector (fly screen) is ideal for riders that want more protection from wind and weather. The screen is extendable and has wider dimensions (compared with the standard windscreen).

The usual range of features - direct from the factory - is available for further customisation and is integrated during production at the Berlin plant. Special equipment can subsequently be fitted by the customer, or by any BMW motorcycle dealership.
