Just the same as the 250LC but with a bigger
engine and a second front disc. Same faults
and similar performance, but with less stress.
Very exciting to ride and very popular with
racers, street and track. 347cc l/c 2-stroke
twin. 45hp, 320lb, 35mpg, 110mph.
Thorough redesign of the earlier Elsie with
an improved chassis and Power Valve engine makes
this the sports 350 to go for. Few problem areas
as long as raced examples are avoided. Absolute
tops in the smiles per mile ratings on twisty
roads! No longer made and Mitsui have stopped
importing the Brazil-built RD350R. Price dependant
on condition and lack of home tuner's attention.
347cc 2-stroke twin. 59hp, 320lb, 45mpg, 120mph.

The guy at the bar looked dazed, staring
out of the 1975 Yamaha RD350 ad with bitter
embarrassment. The copywriter's headline
served up a little back-handed solace to
wash down with that last swallow of beer
from the mug in his hand. "Don't feel
bad. You're not the first 750 rider to get
blown off by a Yamaha 350." Anybody
old enough to read a bike magazine back
in '75 knew it was true |

Elsie. The bike that summed up teenage
kicks and chip shop heroes the length and
breadth of the UK and beyond. The RD350
was always nature's progression from the
Fizzie (FS-1E) to bigger bikes. James Whitham
is a big fan of both. The LC was part of
a forgotten era on both the road and the
track. Many a big-name racer came up through
the ranks of the Yamaha Pro-Am series (Niall
Mackenzie and Damon Hill, to name but two).
Born in 1980, LC was a liquid-cooled version
of the stock RD (which has many names, but
stands for race developed) which was then
given a YPVS (Yamaha Powervalve System)
to up horsepower (what it actually upped
was the front wheel. A lot). It was great-handling,
mid-weight sportsbike loved by thousands.
Until Yamaha gave it a fairing (RD350R)
and then moved production to Borneo or some
where.

The bike was stripped to the frame and
welded and braced where needed before a
full respray. The engine has been part rebuilt
with a new set of pistons and rebored barrels.
The carbs are standard and the pipies are
an immaculate set from Germany (Not the
restricted ones though) The rear shock also
came from Germany and is in first class
condition. The rest of the bike is not totaly
standard as there is a chromed F2 rear swing
arm fitted. Other different parts are 4
pot front calipers off an RGV with accompanying
master cylinder with braided hoses. The
rear brake has an R1 master cylinder with
standard caliper and braided hose. |
